Hi there,
When I meet fellow IC pros looking for an intranet/EX solution, I often hear “Honestly, I just can’t wait to stop sending newsletters.”
I laugh a bit because even the most epic intranet in the world still needs a multichannel amplification strategy, and that usually includes — you guessed it — a newsletter.
Here’s the good news: Newsletters don’t have to be painful to put together or to read. I love a fresh, fun, well-done one hitting my inbox.
What if your Slack were to blow up in the BEST way with heart emojis and kudos every other Wednesday when you send out yours? I want that for you. Let’s make it happen.
Start by building a newsletter worth the scroll:
- It’s actually helpful. Corinne in Operations may want to highlight an obscure policy about printer usage, but if it’s not relevant to most employees, suggest other channels.
- It’s the right size. No one wants to doomscroll a company newsletter. Make the intro compelling, summarize the need to know, and link out for more.
- It sparks joy. Find creative, human ways to make even the driest topics engaging — like benefits updates or policy reminders. A clever headline, relatable analogy, or bit of humor can turn “meh” content into a must-read.
- It feels human. Skip the “mystery corporate being” voice. Even if you don’t put your name at the bottom, find ways to make your newsletter warm. Insert names, emojis, affirmations — anything to make it feel like it came from a real person.
Bottom line: Your newsletter doesn’t have to suck. I send out ours, The Picnic, every two weeks, and I love it. Because I make it my personal mission to give our people the warm fuzzies by infusing creativity, joy, and connection. I’ve got tips, so keep the scroll going.

Keep ’em guessing, but give ’em something steady to hold onto
Okay, so I may not have the secret sauce that guarantees newsletter success (if only), but here’s what I do know: You need to balance surprise with consistency. Sounds paradoxical, right?
Here’s how I play with both. I like to insert custom greetings for all of my employee newsletters. My favorite one to date? “Oh hey, well if it isn’t my favorite Simpplifier @Name!”
I even got a couple of cheeky replies from people who said, “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.” Delight achieved.
But I keep the format consistent using the same categories each edition with rotating features like:
- Hot jobs: A nudge for referrals and career curiosity
- Moving in, on, around: Because let’s be honest, it’s only natural to want to know who’s new, who’s changing roles, and who’s moving on
- Recognition spotlight: A quick hit of feel-good energy to celebrate wins and shout-outs always gets people clicking and virtually cheering
That balance — comfort in predictability + joy in the unexpected — is the real sweet spot.

Inspired by fellow comms pro Helen Reynolds, I added a mysterious “smile button” — a zero-context, semi-obnoxious rainbow colored button that links to something smile-worthy — a happy Golden Retriever jumping into piles of leaves, an inspirational quote, and everything in between.
The first time I tried it? Instant hit. It turned into a whole #watercooler convo in Slack — and made my heart soar!

Newsletter wrap-up
The truth is, you may not be in a place to turn your newsletter topsy-turvy and go full rebrand. And that’s okay. Start with a small tweak here, a pivot there.
If you’re struggling to ditch the corporate tone because the “powers that be” want it buttoned up, try weaving in people-first content. Those small shifts add up. Over time, they’ll move you in a whole new direction.
What I don’t want you to do is give up and assume your newsletter will always be a drag. Because it doesn’t have to be.
