You’re in for a treat. I’m going to tell you about the unhinged company meeting that still haunts me — and how I survived to (mostly) love all-hands meetings again.

The scene: 2020 (shocking, I know). Virtual all-company meeting. Professional audio-visual (AV) support handled the tech while I focused on content.

The plot twist: Ten minutes before showtime, my AV superstar lost power and Wi-Fi. “This is fine,” I told myself. (Narrator: It was not fine!)

I hit “Start Meeting” with false confidence.

The chaos unleashed:

  • People flooding in unmuted
  • Me, frantically muting one-by-one while admitting folks
  • Advancing slides with my remaining brain cells

Then Carl — everyones favorite colleague — started drawing on my slides. I didn’t even know that was possible.

While Googling how to disable Zoom annotations, I muttered, What am I even doing right now?!

My work besties Teams message popped up instantly: Sis, you are not on mute.

Soul = departed. I almost walked across the street for a 9 a.m. margarita.

But I stayed. We regrouped. Created backup plans for our backup plans and became virtual meeting ninjas.

The aftermath: This experience left me spiraling before every all-hands meeting. Because let’s be real — they’re stressful even when nothing explodes. You’re juggling missed exec deadlines, endless “Can we squeeze this in?” requests, meh content, logistics, follow-ups … It’s a lot.

The redemption: These days, I love our PPL SYNCs (Simpplr’s version). Why? The content actually works. It’s engaging and fun, and people genuinely want to show up.

I’ve learned some tricks. I’m sharing them today — plus extra goodies to elevate your employee engagement game.

Go on now — get to scrolling!

Glow-up goals: Quartz’s intranet transformation

Real talk — the only thing worse than a boring, poorly run town hall is a boring, poorly run intranet. Amiright? It’s supposed to be the heartbeat of your organization, but if it’s not done properly, it ends up being part content wasteland, part employee ghost town.

So, we’re doing a webinar with Ragan. Not me, Regan, but Ragan Communications. It’s called Building Connection in a Remote-First World: How Quartz Health Built a Digital Workplace Employees Actually Use.

We recently featured Quartz in a customer case study — and on September 9, you’ll get the behind-the-scenes scoop live from their IC leader. They’ll spill how they took their intranet from static and snooze-worthy to a buzzing hub of connection and collaboration. Expect practical tips, plenty of inspo, and a roadmap so good you’ll be tempted to copy and paste.

Industry experts + AI strategies + zero cost = IC gold

I’ve gotten a sneak peek behind the scenes of what’s coming at Simpplr’s AI & EX Virtual Summit on September 10. And trust me, it’s going to be so good.

Spicy conversations? Check.
Hot takes? Yep.
Tangible AI tactics that’ll level up your IC game immediately? Absolutely.

I’m looking forward to being part of it. And, even happier to see you there. It’s a half-day of no-fluff, real talk about how AI can actually enhance the employee experience (not replace it), with insights from industry experts and IC pros already using it to work smarter.

It’s practical. It’s powerful. It’s free. Don’t miss it.

Real receipts > recommendations

Everyone’s got theories about what might work on your intranet. But we’re not here for hypotheticals.

This blog delivers the real stuff — actual intranet examples, proven strategies, and cold hard metrics to back it all up. These best practices are already driving adoption and engagement, and we’ve got the receipts to prove it.

Check out what some of our top-notch customers are doing within their intranets (screenshots included) for your own inspo.

Quick tip

Build a better all-hands by letting your people build it with you

If you want more energy and engagement in your town halls or company meetings, stop trying to carry the whole thing on your own. The secret? Curate content with your people, not just for them.

We’ve seen the magic firsthand. When we invite team members to contribute prerecorded customer win stories, employee shout-outs, inspirational quotes, or even song selections, the meeting goes from “just another update” to something everyone wants to be part of.

That ownership creates a ripple effect: Suddenly, people aren’t just attending. They’re tuning in to see their teammates get recognized, to watch their stories get told, and to cheer each other on. The hearts and clapping live reactions? Off the charts.

It’s not about flashy slides or perfect transitions. It’s about belonging. When your people feel like it’s their meeting too, the engagement takes care of itself. Why does that matter to your leadership? Because engagement leads to productivity, and productivity leads to business metrics they care about.

Quick move

Music is a universal connector — let it set the tone. Run a song poll on your intranet feed or rotate teammates’ song picks for your all-hands meeting intro, then build a shared playlist to boost energy and connection across the company.

Quick, quick move:
Pick a high-performing, influential, or key employee to offer a quote for the week. Then have them record a 60-second clip (nothing fancy!) on why they chose the quote.

Start small, think big

Town halls can be stressful, chaotic, and a little too heavy on the KPI vibes. In our quest to make leaders look buttoned-up, we sometimes forget these meetings can (and should) connect people and even spark a little joy.

They don’t have to be boring. Start small. If your all-hands are feeling flat, try one or two low-lift ways to make them more human and high-vibe.

  • Tap your internal hype squad for good news
  • Crowdsource a kick-off song
  • Spotlight a customer win or a team hero

Once you open that door, the good stuff starts flowing. People want to feel included — give them the mic, and they’ll show up ready to cheer.

You got this. Now go forth and run the all-hands your people actually want to attend. And if you have your own town hall horror story, please reply or send it to me on LinkedIn.
