Newsletter April 2025

Hi,

My name is Regan Zuege, and I want you to know that I see you, fellow IC hustler. I may be leading internal comms at an IC-friendly place like Simpplr, but after more than 10 years in the industry, I know how easy it is for people in our profession to feel underappreciated and overextended.

We’re expected to fix broken messaging, rescue last-minute requests, and drive engagement without clear ownership or proper resources. And yet, we wouldn’t trade it for the world — because this work matters, and we find meaning in the mess.

This email is for the strategists, storytellers and unsung heroes of internal communications. Each edition will serve up insights, inspiration and no-BS strategies to elevate your impact and redefine what great internal comms look like.

Herding cats, fighting fires, making magic:
a day in the life of an internal communicator

You’ve been there before — one minute you’re crafting a jargon-free message for leadership, and the next you’re being messaged by someone is asking you where they can find the company travel policy. (If only they could search the intranet themselves.) Internal comms is not just about churning out a newsletter or being the go-to guru for company information — it’s equal parts art, science and sheer persistence. What does a typical day look like? Step inside the role and see if it feels familiar. Trigger warning: Unanticipated Teams messages, unnecessary meetings, and lots of “circling back” are included in this article.

How AI digital employee experience trends
are making work more personal

The AI shake-up is real — some days it feels like we’re in a sci-fi movie. Other days, it’s just another tool we’re still figuring out. But one thing’s for sure: It’s changing how we work. From smarter assistants to seamless experiences, here’s what’s shaping the employee experience in 2025, and what it actually means for your people.

Quick tip

Feeling stuck with your IC goals? Fix what’s broken — then build.

If you’ve already nailed down your IC goals for the year, way to go! Seriously, that’s huge! But maybe you’re not feeling great about your goals. Maybe you left them a little ambiguous because — let’s face it — most of what we plan to do as IC professionals gets derailed by the unpredictable, ever-mounting “urgent” needs of others.

So rather than get overly ambitious, let’s start small and take a hard look at what’s NOT working. Are employees missing key messages? Are managers struggling to communicate? Is your intranet a ghost town?

Instead of adding more to your plate, fix what’s broken first. Identify gaps, streamline processes, analyze your tools, and cut the clutter. Rely on analytics and metrics, and if you don’t have those, Slack a few stakeholders to ask what matters to them and what they’re missing from current communications.

Quick move

Ask yourself (or your team): If we could only focus on one IC challenge this year, what would drive the biggest change? Start there.

Before you go, just know…

Internal comms is a balancing act. You’re juggling messages, stakeholders and last-minute surprises, all while trying to make a real impact. Some days, it’s exhilarating, other days, it’s just a lot.

Know you aren’t alone. I genuinely want to help you thrive. Hit reply and tell me a bit about yourself and your role. What keeps you up at night? What are your biggest challenges? It might just spark the topic for a future newsletter.

Until next time, keep fighting the good fight. Remember, you’re not just the messenger. You’re a force for connection, clarity and change.
