Hi ,

This morning, I pressed the brew button on my Keurig and stared blankly at my kitchen backsplash, waiting for my caffeine fix. Suddenly, I remembered something I needed to do. So I walked, mug in hand, with purpose back to my bathroom — only to stop mid-stride the second I crossed the doorway. Wait, what was I about to do?

Has that happened to you? That moment where the intent was there, but the clarity was not?

It’s frustrating. And honestly, (hot take alert) I think we do the same thing in IC.

We get a vague request to “update the team” about a policy, program, or announcement. We volley back and forth via email to get the details because, shocker: it’s all coming together at the last minute. We do our thing — make it readable, maybe even a little beautiful. Then we hit publish.

We think we’re being clear. We think we’re walking with purpose. But somewhere along the way, we lose the thread — and our people are left standing in the doorway, wondering what they’re supposed to do.

Because updates don’t prompt action. They don’t drive change. They don’t build culture.

I see you — posting, sharing, communicating your little heart out. I’ve been there. And while part of me wants to say, “Hey you, cut that out,” instead, I’ll say:

“Hey you, I think we can do better.”

This issue of IC You is a call to refocus. It’s not just about what we’re saying but why we’re saying it. Because great internal comms doesn’t just inform people — it empowers them.

I’ve got tips. I’ve got some IC goodness just for you. It’s been a week, amiright?! And you’ve earned a scroll. Let’s get to it.

A full-circle Summit moment

Real talk: In 2021, I was an IC pro at a nonprofit with an itty-bitty budget just trying to move the needle. Attending Simpplr’s Virtual Summit was a turning point in my career. Before I valued the platform, I valued Simpplr’s resources and expertise. I took pages and pages of notes, and those insights turned into new tactics and skills that made me better at my job.

And now? I have the honor of hosting our Simpplr Summit kick-off panel. (Talk about a full-circle moment.)

I truly believe you’ll walk away just as inspired as I once was by the stellar panelists and all the other industry-shaping IC pros who I regularly turn to for ideas and insight. I hope you’ll join me!

Governance > guesswork

It seems that a lot of internal comms folks have strong feelings about content governance. Are your palms getting a little clammy? I get it.

I’ve lived in the Wild Wild West of content with no governance — it’s 0% fun. We all want governance. We need governance in order to have long-term impact. But our brains are not wired to create complex governance plans from scratch. (Insert shameless Simpplr plug because built-in auto-governance really does make my heart sing.)

Whether or not you have a killer employee experience platform, there are a few steps you can take to make intranet governance a heck of a lot less painful — and a whole lot more effective.

We love words, but numbers talk.

If you’ve been in the IC game for a while, you’ve likely heard the rumbings: Internal comms pros are under pressure to prove impact, and that means measuring what we do.

For too long, we all ambled along saying, “You can’t measure internal comms like you do marketing and PR,” and honestly? We were okay with it. We’re words people. Numbers are not our thing.

But then, we needed more resources and better tools, and we realized data talks.

So whether you have a 37-slide presentation that proves your value or you’re navigating the abyss with no data, unsure of where to even start, I’ve got you.

Quick tip

If you want your comms to drive action — not confusion — embrace the magic of structure.

Templates aren’t boring. They’re a gift to your readers. A simple, familiar format helps employees know what to expect, find what they need faster, and remember what matters.

Next time you’re publishing an announcement, try this:

  • Start with a TL;DR: Pull out the one thing they need to know and any action that needs to be taken. (We know how attention spans work these days.)
  • Use the body copy for quick context: Why does this matter? Who’s affected? When is the thing happening?
  • End with clear action steps: What should they do next and by when?

If you’re not a fan of publishing content in a template-driven format, you can still use a template behind the scenes to gather information from your context experts and to make sure you’re checking all the boxes.

Quick move

Structure = clarity. Clarity = action. That’s how you help people take the next step instead of skimming and forgetting.

Less panic. More purpose.

Just remember, any time you get in the weeds with your comms, while we do love some good positive intent, action is what drives real change. Keep your message focused and clear. Convoluted messages can lead to panic. Just ask David and Moira.
